Bridge Talk – Connie’s April Update

On April 16, 1916, the government of Alberta passed a bill granting women’s suffrage. The Equal Suffrage Statutory Law Amendment Act made Alberta the third province in Canada to give women the right to vote after Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Our Board President, Susan Kennard attended the Legislature as a representative from our constituency, taking her place with other recognized women to recreate the historic photo taken in 1916 on the steps of the Alberta Legislature. As we celebrate this milestone in Canadian history, I can’t help but notice that the tides have started to turn, as we work on initiatives to encourage people to get out and vote and to engage in constructive civic engagement.

We also know that issues like wage parity, accessible childcare; freedom from sexualized violence; and economic security are just some of the rights that we continue to fight for.

At home we hosted our own celebration of local women with the  Bow Valley Women of Distinction Awards, co-presented by Soroptimist International. Madeline Crilly, Carolin Crofts and Dr. Priscilla Wilson are three amazing women who have demonstrated exemplary achievement in their professional and community life and provide inspiration to all of us!

In the event world, I would like to extend a huge thank you to our everyone who helped to make VINEart 2016 a huge success including donors, friends, attendees, volunteers, our dream-team committee and sponsors. A very special thanks to Fairmont Resorts and Hotels for their second year as a Presenting Sponsor; Silvertip Resort for hosting our event; and Alison at the Cellar Door for providing all the amazing wine; and Air Canada for enabling our Raffle. And to our amazing committee Alison Nagel, Sally Caudill, Lisa Vinderskov, Chris Bartolomie, Diane Dreszach, Holly Holbrook, Suzanne White, Lorinda Stewart, Steve Crotty, Carla Snow and Paula Krupa – I am grateful for your commitment to women and children in need of shelter and the hours of hard work to raise awareness and support.

Our final numbers will be available once we close off the grand raffle for two Air Canada flights to Dubai and a week at the Fairmont Dubai. We do expect to end up with about $65,000 in proceeds towards our shelter operations To purchase a ticket visit All proceeds will be used to help cover our day to day operating expenses and training, as well as supporting our longer term plans towards developing new facilities for the Bow Valley.

As we wrap up our fiscal year and dive into our audit, I would like to recognize our hard working team and volunteers who have made this year successful. We have worked hard to build a very solid team and I am grateful for the passion, commitment and expertise that everyone brings to our organization.

On June 22, we will host our Annual General Meeting here at the YWCA and I hope you will save the date in your calendar and join us.
